Mammoth Mutt is a pink-haired chihuahua. She can inflate and expand herself to enormous proportions. Mammoth Mutt is part of the DSP (Dog Star Patrol). She is a puppy in the episode Puppy Problems. She does not appear in Face Time, with The Dog Star Patrol. And does not appear in Bones of Contention, and The Good Life.

History[]

She is similar to a member from the original Space Canine Patrol Agency that appeared in the Super boy comic books, issues 131 and 132. Similar to the cartoon, she was one of the first members of the S.C.P.A. to meet Krypto.

Personality[]

Mammoth Mutt is mostly shown to be brave, heroic and friendly towards her friends. She is also bubbly, strong and adorable overall, and she rarely shows a trace of fear, especially when confronting an evildoer (appearing to be twice as tough when inflated).

In one episode (see below), Mammoth Mutt is also a bit arrogant, believing herself to be the perfect leader when Brainy Barker is accidentally knocked out by a puff of sleeping gas. She is a bit humorous as well, whether she’s laughing from being tickled or using a pun in a serious situation, (for example, “Like they say in the storybooks, ‘That’s how the tale ends!”). But she also a very slight temper, particularly when someone calls her “little,” like in one particular instance when being confronted by unpleasant guard dogs (see below).

Powers and Abilities[]

Alien Physiology: Mammoth Mutt is an alien dog from another planet who possesses abilities involving inflating her body.

  • Inflation & Spherical Form: Mammoth Mutt can inflate and expand her body (or belly) into a gigantic ball-like shape that deflects projectiles, allows her to roll at fast speeds and bounce to great heights.
    • Limb Expansion: Mammoth Mutt can also focus her limbs to expand for more strength.
    • Deflection: While rolling around as a ball, she can deflect incoming projectiles.
    • Enhanced Strength: While rolling around inflated, she can slam into large objects or crush them.
    • Enhanced Durability: While rolling around as a ball, she can withstand powerful blows.
    • Super Leap: While rolling around with a gigantic ball-like stomach, she can bounce around with little effort.

Weaknesses[]

  • Low Defenses: If someone is strong enough to lift her up while inflated, Mammoth Mutt seems to be helpless.
  • Ticklishness: If someone manages to tickle her while being crushed, she will laugh uncontrollably and will get exhausted. As shown in "The Living End", Mammoth Mutt inflates and attempts to trap Krypto's Tail in a hole. However, the tail will use the Mammoth Mutt's huge belly as an advantage to playfully tickle her. Unable to keep her belly out of The Tail's teasing, Mammoth Mutt briefly tries to stay in control. Unfortunately for Mammoth Mutt, her belly is so sensitive to tickling that she rolls over backwards with hysterical laughter.

Appearance[]

Mammoth Mutt is a Chihuahua with bubble gum pink fur, big blue eyes with long eyelashes, cream-colored ear innards, muzzle and tummy, a small thin tail, bangs, large pointed ears, a small black nose, and a white dog collar with a red, hearted-shaped tag.

When she activates her power, she becomes gigantic and ball-shaped, with her small head, legs and tail protruding from her enormous, spherical body.

Episode Appearances[]

Mammoth Mutt appears in the following episodes:

Season 1[]

"Meet the Dog Stars"[]

In the debut episode of both Mammoth Mutt, as well as the Dog Star Patrol, she is first seen, alongside Bulldog, Hot Dog and Tail Terrier, confronting a small blue kitten. Krypto, believing the kitten to be in trouble and in danger from the rather unusual-looking dogs, steps in. Mammoth Mutt confronts him, telling him he has no idea what’s really going on. As she speaks, Bulldog notices the kitten getting away and chases after him. Krypto tries to protect the kitten while fighting off the dogs, and discovers to his shock, they are actually alien dogs, each with different superpowers. After Krypto subdues Tail Terrier and Hot Dog, Mammoth Mutt attempts to flatten him, by turning into a gigantic ball; only for Krypto to use his super strength to lift her up. Tail Terrier, tied up in his own tail, notes that thanks to Krypto, the kitten escaped. Mammoth Mutt deflates, and Bulldog activates a communicator on his collar, asking some unknown presence to beam them all up.

He, his cohorts, and Krypto, are instantly beamed onto a large spaceship, shaped like a giant hydrant, orbiting Earth. There, Krypto meets the dogs’ leader, Brainy Barker. Krypto tells Mammoth Mutt that she can (literally) get off his back, to which she indignantly responds “Humph! Well, excuse me!” Brainy introduces herself and the other four dogs, then explains to Krypto, via a vision she can generate with her ears, why they were chasing the little kitten from earlier. Brainy explains that the kitten is named Snooky Wookums, and he is really evil. They were trying to stop him from reaching Earth, but they failed, due to Krypto’s interference. This prompts Krypto to join them and make up for his previous mistake by apprehending Snooky. An alarm sounds at that moment, and they discover that Snooky is at the city animal shelter.

Krypto, Hot Dog, Bulldog, Tail Terrier and Mammoth Mutt arrive to stop Snooky. But, instead of surrendering, Snooky uses a crystal on his collar to change a group of caged stray cats into gigantic saber-toothed cats. Working together, they fight off the cats, including Mammoth Mutt using her gigantic spherical form to stop a couple of the sabers from attacking Krypto by sitting on their tails. Krypto ultimately foils Snooky by using his heat vision to destroy the crystal, resulting in the sabers reverting back to their original forms. Outnumbered and powerless, Snooky inevitably escapes.

Later, back on the Dog Stars’ ship, Mammoth Mutt and her fellow Dog Stars thank Krypto for his help in stopping Snooky. They all then, with the exception of Brainy, jump on top of Krypto in a friendly (and literal) dogpile.

"My Pet Boy"[]

After Kevin is mistakenly taken by a family of giant alien dogs from another planet, Krypto calls on the Dog Stars to help rescue him. As Brainy uses her vision-generating powers to read Krypto’s mind and find out where the ship is headed, they discover that the ship is from a distant planet called “Canus Magnus.” Mammoth Mutt says she’s heard of it, saying that it’s a planet of giant dogs, even inflating herself to emphasize the point. Once they arrive on the planet, the guard dogs refuse to let them enter, stating that the Dog Stars have no jurisdiction on their turf. Krypto stubbornly refuse to leave without Kevin, angering the guard dogs. However, before they can arrest Krypto for intrusion, Mammoth Mutt inflates herself and bounces at the guards, knocking them backward. Unfortunately, this alerts more guards dogs to their presence. Krypto and Mammoth Mutt flee into an empty hangar, only then to trick to guards by having Krypto fly over them with Mammoth Mutt and block the entrance, nullifying the opposition. In the end, Krypto and the Dog Stars get Kevin back and take him home.

"Puss in Space Boots"[]

After Krypto goes missing, the Dog Stars seek out his sidekick, Streaky, in hopes of finding him. Tail Terrier, Mammoth Mutt and Paw Pooch find Streaky outside the local meat market. Believing the Dog Stars mean to do him harm, Streaky tries to escape. Mammoth Mutt inflates herself and bounces right in Streaky’s path, blocking his way out. He tries to escape the other way, but is blocked by Paw Pooch’s many legs. He is finally caught by Tail Terrier, using his tail as a lasso. They all are beamed onto the Dog Stars’ ship. Brainy tells Streaky that Krypto was captured and subdued by a disguised Snooky, using a bit of kryptonite, and was taken onto Mechanikat’s ship. They send Streaky undercover in order to rescue him. In the end, after Krypto’s rescue, the Dog Stars make Streaky an honorary member of the Patrol.

"Circus of the Dog Stars"[]

Mammoth Mutt and the other Dog Stars pose as main attractions at an intergalactic circus in the galaxy, with Mammoth Mutt’s act involving her inflation powers. However, unbeknownst to them, Krypto and Streaky, it is all a money-making scheme, perpetrated by both Snooky and the circus’ greedy owner. Krypto, suspicious and confused by his friends’ new occupation, sets out to investigate what’s really going on. Later on, when he finds the Dog Stars, he suddenly finds himself in the center ring. The Ringmaster announces the show’s greatest presentation; “the capture of Superdog.” Krypto avoids all their attempts to catch them and discovers that they’re being controlled by special dog collars. He successfully removes all of them, freeing his friends from the collars’ power, and they all confront the Ringmaster. The Dog Stars return to their ship and Krypto and Streaky leave the circus, with the Ringmaster and Snooky forced to pose as circus acts for their crimes.

"The Living End"[]

Mammoth Mutt and her friends are busy collecting moon rocks from the moon. She demonstrates what she calls a “moon bounce” by leaping into the air and even spinning around the American flag, which she almost uproots and Tail Terrier straightens it out, warning her that it’s “U.S. Government property.” Then, she then expands her front paws to push a pile of moon rocks onto a platform being carried by Krypto, adding, “Just call me “Handy Hound!” At one point, Paw Pooch finds a glowing red rock, much to everyone else’s amazement.

Later, Tusky Husky informs Brainy and Krypto of the special rock Paw Pooch found. Everyone gathers to see the remarkable discovery, only for Krypto to discover, to his horror, that the “rock” in question is really red kryptonite. A strange glowing effect overtakes him, and Mammoth Mutt inquires as to what’s going on. Krypto explains to her that red kryptonite has strange effects on him. After a few seconds, everyone discovers that Krypto's tail has become detached from his body and has gained sentience. The Tail bounces around the ship and causes the Dog Stars grief for a bit. At one point, Tail Terrier tries to lasso the out-of-control Tail with his own tail, only to catch Mammoth Mutt instead (much to her annoyance).

Eventually, the Tail beams himself to Metropolis, resulting in Brainy sending Krypto and the others to Earth to catch it before the tail causes any trouble. Once on Earth, Tusky tries to subdue the Tail by using his tusk to drill a crack in the street, causing the Tail to fall inside and Mammoth Mutt to inflate herself and trap him inside. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work, as the Tail tickles Mammoth Mutt’s belly. This causes her to laugh hysterically and grow even bigger. She rolls backward (unintentionally) right over Tusky, causing his tusk to get stuck in the ground.

After the Tail succeeds in outwitting the other Dog Stars, Mammoth Mutt, having calmed down from her tickling fit, deflates and asks Krypto how they’re ever going to catch the Tail. Krypto, getting an idea, says that “to catch a Tail, they’ll have to think like a Tail.” He grabs a paintbrush and a can of black paint from the local paint store, and paints a scary face on her tummy. This makes the highly ticklish Mammoth Mutt giggle. After Krypto’s finished, she adds that she’s “been tickled enough” for one day. At that moment, the Tail happens by. Mammoth Mutt inflates herself, and corners the Tail. Frightened by both the roaring sound she makes and the scary face on her tummy, the Tail hides behind Krypto in terror. However, he realizes that Mammoth Mutt tricked him, but Krypto stops him before he gets away again. The Tail then breaks down in tears, explaining that he was only having fun, as he only sees what’s going on behind Krypto and never what Krypto sees. Saddened by his story, even Mammoth Mutt begins to cry and sheds a few tears. She and the others are not seen again by the end of the episode, but Brainy informs Krypto that Mammoth Mutt and the others repaired the damage to Metropolis caused by the Tail.

"Puppy Problems"[]

Krypto is called on by the Dog Stars to participate in a rescue mission, in which a group of alien kids on a field trip are stranded on an asteroid headed straight for the sun. Once there, they discover that it is was all a trap concocted by Mechanikat and Snooky. They use a ray on the dogs to transform them into harmless puppies. Mammoth Mutt and Brainy, as puppies, meet each other, not remembering their own names and proceed to playfully wrestle. Mechanikat approaches the puppies, telling them that he’s their “pappy” and he’s come to take them home from school, (with secret intentions of stranding them on a distant planet where they’ll never be found again so as not to foil his plans for universal domination ever again).

Once on board his ship, the puppies recklessly play around, which Mechanikat finds to be an incredible nuisance. Mammoth Mutt, curiously, presses one of the buttons on his chair, launching him out of his seat and sending him crashing into a wall. Finding the pups’ behavior to be much for him to tolerate, he sends them into another room to take a nap. While there, the puppies discover their original superpowers, including Mammoth Mutt discovering she can inflate herself, accidentally knocking Hot Dog aside as she does. They head back to the control room to show Mechanikat. He does his best to hide his disdain and orders Snooky to take them into the “play room,” where they end up turning the entire ship upside down.

After turning the ship back the right way, they get bored quickly and want Mechanikat again. However this time, Brainy, using her mind-reading powers, discovers Mechanikat’s true evil intentions, and the puppies turn against him. Mechanikat sends two of his Catbots to deal with them, but they end up getting flattened by a giant Mammoth Mutt. They find the puppy ray and change themselves back. Before Mechanikat can do them any harm, they use the ray on him, turning him into a kitten. Krypto and the Dog Stars then exit the ship, leaving a baby Mechanikat behind.

"Bat Hound Meets the Dog Stars"[]

Mammoth Mutt and the others have landed their ship on Earth and are busy with making repairs. Tusky uses his tusk to give her a ship panel, which she is much too small to carry. The panel lands on top of her, to which she then inflates to a massive size, tossing the panel into place so that Hot Dog can use heat powers to weld it on. At that moment, Krypto shows up with Ace introduces him to the Dog Stars. When he tells the others that he doesn’t possess any powers, they ask him how he fights crime, to which he simply states “I throw things.” This Mammoth Mutt finds hard to accept. Because of his lack of powers, the Dog Stars mock him, which doesn’t bother Ace and he leaves. However, when Snooky abducts Hot Dog without leaving a trace, Ace may be the only one they can count on. After Ace rescues Hot Dog and saves the day, Mammoth Mutt and the others apologize for their immaturity.

"Tusky's Tooth"[]

While he and his fellow Dog Stars help an alien truck driver through a dangerous asteroid field, Tusky Husky loses his tusk, getting it wedged in a piece of space rock. They take it back to their ship and try to figure out what to do about it. Mammoth Mutt asks Tusky if he can reattach it, to which he replies that it is simply a baby tooth. Brainy tells him that he can’t go on any missions until his adult tooth grows in. When Mammoth Mutt asks what they’ll do with the old tooth, Bulldog scratches his back against it, suggesting that it would make a nice back-scratcher. Krypto tells them about how whenever Kevin puts a tooth under his pillow, he receives money from the Tooth Fairy. Intrigued by this idea, Tusky ask them to remove the tusk from the rock.

As they do so, unbeknownst to any of the dogs, a spy drone sent by Snooky is watching them. The drone flies back to Mechanikat’s ship where Snooky presents the footage to his boss. After learning that Tusky lost his tusk, Mechanikat plans to use the tusk to finally defeat the Dog Stars once and for all. That night, disguised as the Tooth Fairy, he sneaks onto the ship. When Tusky awakens and spots him, believing Mechanikat to be the real Tooth Fairy, he asks for his new tooth to grow in; to which Mechanikat taps his muzzle with his wand, then leaves with Tusky’s tusk.

The next day, Tusky tells the others about his encounter with Mechanikat. Mammoth Mutt asks him if he’s sure it was really the Tooth Fairy, and he confirms it, telling her that only a fairy could be so “lovely.” Suddenly, an alert sounds. The dogs discover that Tusky’s tooth, with a rocket booster attached, is heading straight for them. At that moment, Mechanikat transmits a message, tauntingly telling them that Tusky’s tusk will not stop until they and their ship are completely destroyed. The Dog Stars, with the exceptions of Brainy and Tusky, fly out to try and stop the tusk. Mammoth Mutt inflates herself, but instead of her body deflecting it, the tusk keeps going in a straight direction, causing her to bounce right off of it and go floating away.

Feeling responsible for all the trouble, Tusky wishes really hard for his adult tooth to grow in, which it conveniently does so at that very moment. Tusky heads out and uses his new tooth to destroy the old one before any damage is done. Mammoth Mutt compliments him, saying he has a “very pretty smile.” Afterwards, when the Dog Stars discover the security footage of Mechanikat disguised as the Tooth Fairy, they humorously post the image all over the galaxy as Mechanikat’s new wanted poster, much to his humiliation.

Season 2[]

"Too Many Cooks!"[]

Krypto and the Dog Stars find themselves caught in the middle of a fierce meteor shower. Mammoth Mutt activates the ship’s deflectors, but while doing so, the violent rocking of the ship causes Paw Pooch and Hot Dog to fall on top of her. She forcibly removes them by inflating herself. However, the force of that causes some tanks to come loose, one of which lands in front of Brainy and leaks sleeping gas, instantly knocking her out.

Once the meteor shower is over and everyone is safe, they all tuck Brainy into her bed. With Brainy out for the time being, they all decide someone should take over as a temporary leader. Mammoth Mutt volunteers herself, because as she says herself, she’s (literally) the biggest and the brainiest.

Later, they all pitch in to repair the ship after the shower. Mammoth Mutt uses her inflation power to flatten out all the bumps and dents caused by the meteors. Then, she Tail Terrier and Paw Pooch all fight over where the ship’s navigator should go, only to break it into pieces. At that moment, Krypto signals the Dog Stars on his communicator. Tail Terrier and Paw Pooch answer him, blocking Mammoth Mutt’s view, causing her to inflate to make room to see. Krypto tells them he’s in trouble, and they hurry to the ship’s control panel to try and help their friend. However, they cannot understand the controls. Mammoth Mutt tells Tail Terrier to pick a control. He does, and the ship falls out of orbit, plummeting towards the planet below. Panicked, she tells him to choose another. He does, and this time, the ship lurches violently in one direction, causing Tail Terrier to slam up against one wall, and Mammoth Mutt against the other (resulting in her, still inflated, to make a farting noise as she does), to which she giggles, “Excuse me.”

Krypto makes back onto the ship, but as he does, the ship is swallowed whole by a Murky mega-mouth blowfish. He informs them of the situation, and after seeing Hot Dog sneeze from a dash of pepper he sniffed, gets an idea, telling the others to work together in order to escape. He escapes the blowfish through his mouth, which attracts the monster’s attention and causes him to chase after him. Once above the surface of the planet’s ocean, Krypto releases a tank full of pepper straight into the fish’s face, and with a powerful sneeze, blows the entire ship and all its occupants back out into space.

Brainy finally wakes up, and informs the others she’s feeling hungry. Hot Dog volunteers to make lunch, and Brainy suggests fish. This prompts Mammoth Mutt and the others, after the blowfish situation, to all cry out “NO!!!”

"Invasion From the Planet Peanut"[]

This episode marks Mammoth Mutt’s final appearance in the series overall. When a mysterious thief steals all the peanuts in Metropolis, Mammoth Mutt, Bulldog and Tail Terrier call on Streaky to help in the caper. They trace a large supply of nuts to an old oak tree in the woods at the edge of the city’s limits. After a brief confrontation with a rather cranky squirrel, who believes Streaky and the Dog Stars are after his winter’s supply of food, all the nuts are suddenly sucked up. They follow the trail into Metropolis, and discover the mystery thief is actually an elephant. A peanut-shaped spacecraft appears and the elephant climbs aboard. Mammoth Mutt directs Brainy as they put a tail on the escaping elephant. Out in space, they find the elephant’s headquarters: a large space station, also in the shape of a peanut. In order to get in closer, they switch their ship into stealth mode. With the entire ship and everyone aboard invisible, Streaky panics, but Mammoth Mutt calms him down; telling him “they’re just invisible, and he is too.” Once inside the station, the heroes’ presence is alerted to the elephants on board. One corners Mammoth Mutt, but she inflates herself to an enormous size, telling him to “pick one someone his own size” then sends him flying with a bump from her massive belly. As the Dog Stars battle the elephants, Streaky eventually finds a plug and uncorks it, causing the nuts to drain out of the station and thwarting the elephants. In the end, the heroes escape with the nuts and return to Earth.

Quotes[]

  • Canus Magnus... I heard about the place. That's the planet of.... (Mammoth Mutt inflates herself.) Giant dogs! (My Pet Boy)
  • "Like they say in the storybooks, 'that's how the tale ends!'" (The Living End)
  • "They're right, you know? You really have no idea what is actually going on here."
  • "Hmpf! Well, excuse me!" ( both from Meet the Dog Stars)

Trivia[]

  • She is similar to the Bouncing Boy from the Legion of Super-Heroes
  • Her appearance has changed in a few ways from how she appeared in the Superboy comic books. Not only has her breed and color scheme changed, her gender changed too. The original character to carry the name Mammoth Mutt was a male dog and resembles a Great Dane or a Pitbull, and his color scheme was a solid, dull pink, almost brown. In issue 131, Mammoth Mutt was penetrated by a missile and died shortly afterward. However, in Issue 132, Mammoth Mutt's girlfriend, Mammoth Miss, joined the Dog Star Patrol. Mammoth Miss had the exact same superpowers as Mammoth Mutt and looks similar to the TV show incarnation of Mammoth Mutt. So, it's likely that Mammoth Mutt in the TV show was based off of Mammoth Miss from the comic books.
  • Fisher Price made a prototype for a Mammoth Mutt action figure. However, before the action figure itself was put into production, the Superdog toy line was stopped. The prototype for the Mammoth Mutt action figure, along with the prototype for a Tusky Husky, action figure (which also never went into production), are now in the hands of an anonymous collector.
